Objective

The 18th Annual Thermal Camp will take place at Air Sailing Gliderport June 4-8, 2012. This seminar includes daily morning ground school sessions and a full afternoon of flying while learning how to thermal your glider efficiently and safely.

Objective

This five day camp is for beginner and intermediate level glider pilots who want to develop efficient thermalling skills for longer local flights and for safe cross country flights.

Who Should Attend

This five-day camp is intended for new, beginner, or intermediate-level soaring enthusiasts who want to:

  • Develop and sharpen their thermalling and soaring skills
  • Learn efficient thermalling and soaring techniques
  • Gain the confidence to advance and enhance their thermalling and soaring abilities without increasing their risk-level.

Daily Schedule

Thermal Camp is five days of soaring talk and practice. Daily lectures, demonstrations, and flights start at 9:00 AM and continue through at least 5 PM. The week is topped off with a banquet and celebration of accomplishments on Friday evening.

Prerequisites

Participants must have:

  • At least a private glider rating
  • Glider with liability insurance and oxygen system (gliders are available for rent)
  • Current San Francisco and Klamath Falls Sectionals
  • Air Sailing Membership (required) is $50 per year. For pilots coming to ASI for the first time, your first year's membership is free.

Participants are encouraged to bring two-place gliders and their instructors.

All pilots who are new to Air Sailing must receive a local area check out before taking their first solo flight. Depending upon experience in high desert soaring, this may include a dual ride with an instructor. All pilots should be familiar with the 2012 Field Operations Guide.

Cost

A $250 participant fee per glider ($100 per additional pilot per glider) includes initial Air Sailing Membership and five days of training and course materials. The participant fee also includes a $50 registration deposit, non-refundable for registrants who cancel less than two weeks prior to the event. Tow charges, living expenses, glider rentals, and incidental costs (e.g., oxygen, end-of-camp banquet), are not included in the participant fee.
